CHAI has been working to achieve and have demonstrable reductions in the mortality rates of young children and pregnant women.

It was made to confront the fact that most children with HIV/AIDS were not treated in the developing world. CHAI was used to help address this major issue. Today the percentage of HIV positive children that are on AIDS treatment is about the same as that of adults.

In 2008 CHAI launched a program to help prevent mother to child transmission of HIV in six countries. Their PMTCT program helps stop pediatric infections. They support mothers and babies from pregnancy and delivery into breastfeeding and long term care for HIV positive mothers and children.

Another item you may find interesting is that researchers are working on easier accessible vaccines. They have been used to prevent infectious diseases. Without the vaccines twice as many children around the work would die from diseases like smallpox, measles, and tetanus. Two new vaccines have been recently developed to help save lives from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia. However, even with these breakthroughs, infectious killers like HIV and malaria still don’t have vaccines.
